Public Health Services
Serving Harper County since 1966
Public Health Services are an important component in the community health system, providing a number of basic services to promote health and wellness, and to protect individuals and communities from injury and disease. Our programs, services, and resources work to put these goals into action.
The Harper County Health Department also partners with community members and organizations to make other services available, such as being an access point for SRS benefit programs, following up on public health concerns, and public health emergency preparedness planning. We are available to provide community presentations for organizations and to participate in community meetings for the health and safety needs of the citizens of Harper County. Our office also has a wealth of medical information that we are willing to share to promote healthy lifestyles and locate resources for individual and family needs.
Here is a quick summary of a few of the services we provide:
Basic Health Services: Blood Pressure checks, height/weight, BMI, injections, TB skin tests, ear/nose/throat checks, foot care, daycare, preschool, and kindergarten physicals, glucose level, hemoglobin check
Immunizations: The immunization program is designed to prevent the spread of contagious diseases that can involve serious health problems and/or death. Kansas Law requires children to be immunized before enrolling in any Kansas School. If you have questions regarding the status of your family’s immunization history and need for additional vaccines please contact our office.
WIC: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant and delivered women and for infants and children from birth to age five. WIC provides infant formula and a variety of nutritional foods, dependent on the age of the child.
Healthy Start: Healthy Start Home Visitors provide support and resource information to families who are expecting a child and following the birth up to a year. The visitors try to make a home visit before the birth and after the birth, to answer questions, provide resources and information, and to provide support to the family. A bundle of useful small baby items and a book are included in the visits. If you are expecting or have a child under the age of one, please contact our office to set up a Healthy Start Home Visit.
Car Seat Inspections: We have three employees who are certified car seat inspections who can make sure that your car seat is installed and fitting correctly. We also have car seats available for families that qualify.
Child Care Licensing: If you plan to provide child care for more than two children for more than 20 hours a week, you will need to obtain the appropriate licensure to conduct your business. The Harper County Health Department no longer provides this service but will direct interested parties to the appropriate contacts to initiate the licensure application process.
Family Planning Services: Initial and annual pelvic examinations, pap smears, birth control pills, Depo Provera Injections, condoms, pregnancy testing, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing , and counseling services are provided through the Family Planning program. We received federal grant funding for this program so that services may be provided on a sliding fee scale.
Disease Investigation: Public Health personnel complete investigations into reportable diseases in our community to try to reduce the incidence and severity of disease outbreaks.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness Planning: The agency is involved with Federal, State, regional and local planning efforts to prepare for a public health emergency and response to infectious disease outbreaks.
In-Home Services: Laundry, cleaning, shopping, errands, meal preparation, and assistance with personal care are available through a variety of in-home service programs under public health. These programs include HCBS/FE, HCBS/PD, Senior Care Act, and a sliding fee private pay option. If you need assistance in the home and do not meet the skilled criterion for home health agency services, please check with us for alternative plans.
